SUMMARY:Merton: How a Human Person Emerges in God’s Image
DESCRIPTION:Mystic Journey Series \n\n\n\nMerton: How a Human Person Emerges in God’s Image.\n\n\n\nPresented by Frank Krebs\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGathering at 8:30 AM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemplative Outreach “Mystic Journey Series” invite you to a time of exploration.\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, June 20th\, Frank Krebs will lay out and explain Thomas Merton’s main themes regarding meditation/contemplation\, according to Merton’s student\, James Finley. Frank will analyze these themes from the perspective of \n\n\n\n\nThomas Merton as a lens through which we can study other Mystics.  That seems to be the style of James Finley\, student of Thomas Merton\, in his podcast “Turning to the Mystics”.  Merton was the doorway and the lens through which Finley learned other mystics and the frame through which Finley presents them.  So\, Merton\, through Finley\, gives us a kind of summary vision of other mystics and especially the Christian mystical tradition.  My first intention is to lay out Merton’s summary themes\, which he gleaned from his own experience and from studying/exploring these mystics\, so that you will have a good overview of what mysticism (i.e.\, meditation\, contemplation) is.\n\n\n\nHow Merton took what had often become a rigid\, monastic practice and opened up the “fully engaged person” aspect of it.  Merton understands the false self to dissolve in conversation\, in active relationship\, with God; here the true self emerges.  This monastic practice was intended to lead us into that conversation\, that relationship.  In this process we can become more personal\, less impersonal.  So my second intention for this workshop is to explore this process of transformation with you.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a Mystic?  Who is a Mystic? – Exploring the lives and stories of the mystics.\n\n\n\nYou are invited to join us to consider the life and stories of persons who have revealed and written of their experience encountering the extraordinary presence and love of the Divine Reality.\n\n\n\nEach scheduled Saturday\, we will welcome presenters who have been invited to choose a person of their choice who may be considered as a “mystic.” The presenter will offer the story of that mystic’s life and spiritual journey which fostered an extraordinary relationship with God.\n\n\n\nOur life is often touched as we journey into the story of the mystic.  We become more aware that we\, too\, are being mystically formed by the Divine Presence within. The mystics and their life story often become our teachers.\n\n\n\n\n\nFlow for the Day:\n\n\n\n\n8:30 AM    Gathering\, refreshments\n\n\n\n9:00 AM    Welcome\, Announcements\, Introduction\n\n\n\n9:15AM     Presentation: The Themes of Thomas Merton Regarding Contemplative Prayer\n\n\n\n10:00 AM   Break\n\n\n\n10:15 AM    Quick Discussion in Dyads\n\n\n\n10:30 AM   Question and Answer\n\n\n\n1100 AM     Presentation: The Process of Transformation\, the Human Person in God’s Image\n\n\n\n12:00 PM    Quick Discussion in Dyads\n\n\n\n12:15 PM     Lunch\n\n\n\n1:00 PM      Question and Answer\n\n\n\n1:30 PM      “Lectio”\n\n\n\n2:00 PM      “Rendezvous with God\,” a letter\n\n\n\n2:15 PM       “Conversing with God”             \n\n\n\n2:30 PM      “Resting in God”\n\n\n\n2:55 PM      Closing Comments\n\n\n\n3:00 PM      Thank you\n\n\n\nGo In Peace\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring a pen and notebook. There is a $25 registration fee for this event to support our ministry.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonation:   A Free Will Offering Basket for the Center for Action and Contemplation\, where James Finley is\, will be available on the day of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nLight refreshments upon arrival; light potluck lunch at 12:00 pm. Clare & Francis ECC church in Webster Groves\, a retired Presiding Bishop of the Ecumenical Catholic Communion\, continues to participate on the ECC Council of Bishops\, and is a current member of the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches.  He is a student and a teacher of contemplative prayer.  Frank devotes much of his retirement to efforts at improving human relationships in various ways.  He is firmly convinced that contemplation is the foundation of authentic spiritual life and better human relations.   \n\n\n\n“One way to think about contemplation is as an experience of the Great Mystery drawing us into a dance\, an enjoyable\, even thrilling\, experience of togetherness\, which then can and does rub off on the activity of our ordinary lives as a kind of lingering effect of our time in meditation.”   \n\n\n\nFlyer for this event : https://centeringprayerstl.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MJS-Merton-Frank-Krebs.png \n\n\n\n— Frank Krebs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA little history on the formation of the Mystic Journey Series\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE MYSTIC JOURNEY\n\n\n\nThere are many definitions of the word “mystic” as noted in religious traditions throughout the world.  Most traditions agree that the Mystic is a person who seeks through contemplation\, self-surrender and personal transformation the experience of unity with the sacred Absolute Divine reality.Karl Rahner\, in his famous quote regarding the spiritual journey of the future\, said “you will be a mystic or nothing at all …”Everyone is invited to join us to consider the life and stories of persons who have revealed and written of their experience encountering the extraordinary presence and love of Divine reality. Some may call them “saints” or apply other characterizations\, but they were no different than you or I who are seeking the same loving God.Contemplative Outreach of St. Louis anticipate hosting three (3) Saturday presentations this year on March 21st\, June 20th and September 19th featuring presenters who will offer insights on the life of three renowned mystics relating the contemplative dimension of the life and legacy of the seeker who found God.  The teachings of these mystics strive to deepen our understanding of our own search for the Divine in light of the human condition. \n\n\n\nNext Mystic Journey Series: Meister Eckhart with Father Bob Aten on Saturday\, September 19th\, 2026 \n\n\n\nReminders will follow in the upcoming COSTL newsletters.  We encourage you to register early to attend these presentations .. you won’t want to miss it! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information: Susie Brent – susiebrentcostl@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration:\n\n\n\n\n \n\n LinkedInThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n City\n \n \n State / Province / Region\n \n \n ZIP / Postal Code\n \n \n Phone(Required)Please briefly share your contemplative prayer background(Required)If you are bringing guests\, please list their names below. SUMMARY:A Centering Prayer Follow-Up & Renewal Gathering
DESCRIPTION:A Centering Prayer Follow-Up & Renewal GatheringFacilitated by Charlie Lawrence \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesus said to them\, ”Come away with me. Let us go alone to a quiet place and rest for a while”. Mark 6:31 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBack to Basics is a gathering for anyone who would like a little “shot in the arm” for their Centering Prayer practice and for anyone who simply loves the prayer. Each gathering begins with a 20-minute period of Centering Prayer followed by questions and responses\, discussion\, sharing\, and occasional video presentations that support and deepen our understanding of the contemplative journey.Whether you are new to the practice\, returning after some time away\, or have been practicing for years\, you are welcome.Come renew your commitment to the practice\, deepen your understanding of Centering Prayer\, and enjoy the support and encouragement of a contemplative community.  \n\n\n\n\n“Centering Prayer is a way of consenting to God’s presence and action within.” \n\n\n\n— Basil Pennington\, ocso \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and walk ins are welcome. \n\n\n\nTime:\n\n\n\n\n6:00 p.m. Gathering – Bring a light dish to share (Optional) \n\n\n\n6:30 p.m. Program Begins\n\n\n\n8:00 p.m. Conclusion\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring a notebook. It is recommended to bring your book Open Mind\, Open Heart\, by Father Thomas Keating if you have one. This is a beginner book with questions and answers specifically about the centering prayer practice and the spiritual journey. It is a great companion for the journey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Centering Prayer is a discipline to foster interior transformation\, initiated by God and leading\, if we consent\, to divine union. One’s way of seeing reality changes\, which empowers one to perceive and respond to everyday life with sensitivity to the divine presence in\, through and beyond everything.” \n\n\n\n—Thomas Keating\, Open Mind\, Open Heart \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity of Christ Church\n\n\n\nAddress 830 N Kirkwood RdSt. Louis\, MO 63122 \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact Charlie Lawrence at Charlesn.lawrence2@gmail.com \n\n\n\nRegistration for Centering Prayer Follow-Up & Renewal Gathering:\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, however all donations are appreciated. SUMMARY:Access Your Inner Room with Centering Prayer
DESCRIPTION:The EnLIGHTenment Series \n\n\n\nAccess Your Inner Room with Centering Prayer\n\n\n\nPresented by Father Bill Sheehan\, OMI\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscover the transformative power of Centering Prayer as you learn to access your sacred inner sanctuary. Join us to explore the practice of entering your “inner room\,” deepening your relationship with God and discovering greater peace within. \n\n\n\nAccessing our inner room and exploring its transformative effects is a profound spiritual practice rooted in the teachings of Jesus. Just prior to his death\, Fr. Thomas Keating encouraged us to return to the basics. Early in the development of Centering Prayer\, Fr. Thomas placed great emphasis on Matthew 6:6: “Whenever you pray go to your inner room\, close the door and pray to your Father in secret.”This presentation reflects on two practical questions raised by Father Thomas: \n\n\n\n\nHow do we access our inner room?\n\n\n\nWhat begins to happen when we enter our inner room?\n\n\n\n\nThis evening begins with dinner and then we will explore these questions through teaching\, reflection\, and a period of Centering Prayer.  \n\n\n\n Participants will also be introduced to the Four Consents described by Fr. Thomas Keating: \n\n\n\n\n\nConsent to Presence\n\n\n\nConsent to God’s Action Within\n\n\n\nConsent to Let Go\n\n\n\nConsent to Transformation\n\n\n\n\n\nWhether you are new to Centering Prayer or have practiced for years\, this program offers an opportunity to return to the basics\, deepen your contemplative practice\, and experience more fully the transformative journey of the inner room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The ideal disposition for the divine encounter is the gathering together of one’s whole being in silent and alert attentiveness.” – Thomas Keating \n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer for The Inner Room\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Topic: Accessing your inner room with Centering Prayer \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nFather Bill Sheehan\, OMI\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFather Bill Sheehan is a priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI).He holds a Master’s degree ni Formative Spirituality from Duquesne University.Father Sheehan was present at the first Centering Prayer retreat offered by Father Thomas Keating\, OCSO\, at the Lama Foundation ni 1993. Since that time\, he has led numerous Centering Prayer workshops and retreats worldwide. He is known for his gentle presence and long-standingservice in the Centering Prayer community. \n\n\n\n“The ideal disposition for the divine encounter is the gathering together of one’s whole being in silent and alert attentiveness.”Fr.
SUMMARY:The Garden Within
DESCRIPTION:The EnLIGHTenment Series \n\n\n\nThe Garden Within\n\n\n\nDivine therapy … a path to unity\n\n\n\nPresented by Fr. Matthew Flatley\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Thomas Keating was a young college student at Yale University\, spending most of his time in the library consumed with the study of early church teachings on contemplation\, all the while neglecting his academic studies\, he came to understand that the Christian path is an invitation to transformation. He once exclaimed to me\,  “there was so much literature written about our fallen natures\, and conversely\, about the great triumphs of the holy saints\, but I could not find much written about how the average Joe can make this journey.”  Fr. Matt believes this became a life long passion within Thomas Keating\, to discover that sacred path\, and to share his discovery with others. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Topic: \n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer for The Garden Within\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload of Map of Interior Reality\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nFr. SUMMARY:Silent Saturday - 10/10/2026
DESCRIPTION:Silent Saturday\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nListen\, that you may have life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind God in the Silent Love of Self Surrender. \n\n\n\n“The language God best hears is silent love.” \n\n\n\nSaint John of the Cross \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemplative Outreach St. Louis invites you to help create a safe\, quiet space for our upcoming Silent Saturday on October 10th\, 2026. \n\n\n\nLocation:Community of Christ Church830 N. Kirkwood Road\, Kirkwood\, MO 63122 \n\n\n\nSchedule: \n\n\n\n\n8:30 am: Doors open for an optional light breakfast and social gathering for those who wish to connect beforehand.\n\n\n\n9:00 am – 11:00 am: Formal program\n\n\n\n\nTogether\, we will rest in the divine presence\, silently acknowledging our shared need for stillness. Join us for this meaningful time of prayer\, scripture\, optional sharing\, and mutual support for the journey. The morning features two periods of centering prayer with a silent break\, followed by an opportunity to practice Lectio Divina—meaning “divine reading”—using a few sentences of scripture. This practice offers a profound sense of grounding for our personal journeys. \n\n\n\nOur facilitators for this program will be Sarah Legett and Wil Girresch. \n\n\n\nRegistration & Donations:We look forward to seeing you. While registration is encouraged so you can receive a confirmation reminder\, walk-ins are always welcome. \n\n\n\nThere is no fee for this event. If you would like to make a donation of $10—or any amount—to help cover our rent\, website maintenance\, scholarship fund\, and other expenses\, it will be gratefully accepted.
