Classical Piano and
Centering Prayer

Allow yourself to be serenaded by the beautiful sounds of the piano and experience the transformative power of meditation. This event promises to be an unforgettable fusion of musical brilliance and mindfulness with concert pianist, Daniel Schene.

Flow of the day for Sitting with Sounds and Silence

  • Daniel will open with a few remarks about music and centering prayer. We will explore a couple of pieces of classical music that may enhance our sit. 
  • A little intro to CP and the method 
  • Then the four guidelines of Centering Prayer will be reviewed and lead into a  20 minute sit. 
  • Following the meditation, we will listen to several more pieces of classical piano music, alternating with commentary on music, how it effects our inner world and how it relates to meditation.
  • There will be opportunity for participants to share their reflections.

Gathering 1 – 1:30 pm
Piano Event Begins: 1:30 – 3:30 pm
There will be light snacks and refreshments.

Daniel Schene

Pianist Daniel Schene has long been known as a consummate artist and a superlative teacher. Having performed throughout the United States, Canada, South America, and Asia, concert-goers have come to admire his comprehensive musicianship and formidable technique. Symphony, Schene studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts with Rebecca Penneys, and subsequently at Indiana University with György Sebok and Enrica

Cavallo-Gulli. While at IU, he received the prestigious Joseph Battista Memorial Scholarship. Thereafter, he continued his studies at The Eastman School of Music with Penneys.

As a recitalist and concerto soloist, Schene has been acclaimed for his “exquisite pianism and musicianship” (St. Louis Post Dispatch). He has performed at numerous venues, including Salle Cortot and Theatro da Paz. Since 1983, he has given annual solo recitals at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Webster University. He also performs regularly at IU’s Summer Music series and many other music schools throughout the United States.

A passionate chamber musician, Schene has collaborated with such renowned artists as Zara Nelsova, Dénes Kovács, and St. Louis Symphony concertmasters Jacques Israelievitch and David

Halen. He was the duo partner of violinist va Székely of the Esterhazy Quartet for four decades. Schene has also appeared with the Arianna String Quartet and was for many years the pianist of the Trio Americas and the Webster Trio.

Devoted to the music of our time, Schene has played works of Joan Tower, Libby Larsen, James Willey, Andrew List, Roberto Escobar, and David Werfelmann, and has premiered and recorded numerous compositions. Schene is Emeritus Professor of Music at Webster University, where he was director of Piano Studies from 1983 to 2020. He is a founding faculty member of the Indiana University Piano Academy and the Institute of Advanced Vocal Studies in Paris. He has given guest master classes in France, Brazil, Taiwan, and throughout the United States. Schene records for CRI and New World Records.
