United in Prayer Day – Friday & Saturday, March 8-9, 2024 – 23 hours of Global Prayer on Zoom: a three event weekend

March 8-9, 2024 On Zoom 23 Hours

A free, globally-hosted 23-hour day of prayer accessible via Zoom.

In the global unity of silence as God’s first language, we hold vigil for suffering humanity and all creation, and we honor Fr. Thomas Keating’s birthday (March 7), the 40th anniversary of the Contemplative Outreach community, and the growing presence of Christ among us.

No registration necessary for this event.

A brief history of United in Prayer

This year is the 32nd annual United in Prayer Day.  It began as a local event where prayer groups and chapters would come together for a time of prayer and enrichment. There usually would be some DVD that would be especially produced for the time – an excerpt of a recent talk by Thomas Keating. Around 2013, we started putting together a “virtual retreat” schedule for individuals who might not have a prayer group or chapter but who could still participate.  It was the recognition that many people practiced alone but felt connected to the Contemplative Outreach community (or wanted to connect).

In 2020, there was no UiP day as we all were adjusting to the shock of CoVID. A sample schedule was sent out with readings, etc., for people to do on their own at home.

In 2021, the idea formed to have a global Zoom gathering with different people and groups hosting from around the world.  The day was also moved from the third Saturday in March to the Saturday closest to Thomas Keating’s birthday (March 7). And that’s what we’ve been doing ever since.  In a sense, we are now truly celebrating the prayer together … and now incarcerated folks are sitting with us during certain times of the vigil. It’s also completely free – no DVD to purchase, etc.

Some places continue to gather together as a group, but members can still then join different parts of the Zoom vigil.

Join in silence and community at any time, as many times as you are able. Last year many people experienced a powerful transmission of Spirit and transformation of being, by attending multiple sessions, as if on retreat. Each hour will begin with at least 20 minutes of Centering Prayer, followed by an offering from the hosting group, which may include a video segment, the practice of Lectio Divina, selected readings, community sharing, chanting, etc. Please see the schedule of each group’s offering by clicking on the link above.
